This conversation examines Sir Joshua Reynolds’s Portrait of Mai and the life of its subject, Mai, the first Polynesian to visit England. Hampton Sides and Getty curator Richard Rand discuss the painting’s creation, Mai’s experiences in England, and his return to Tahiti during Captain James Cook’s final voyage.The program lasts approximately one hour. For in-person attendees, Hampton Sides will sign copies of his book about Cook’s final voyage afterward.
